UNIQLO is the only brand in India to cross ₹800+ crore without relying heavily on ads or e-commerce listings 🤯
That says a lot about how brand-building actually works.
This is a Japanese brand that started from a small warehouse in Hiroshima.
Slowly made a name for itself through the 90s & grew across 20+ countries.
So when they came to India in 2019, they didn’t follow the usual brand-building script.
They skipped marketplace listings and chose a simpler, more focused path instead:
👉set up 15+ brick-and-mortar stores in key cities
👉reached 17,000+ pin codes through their own D2C platform
👉let people design their own tees in-store with UTme
👉even co-created kurtas with Rina Singh for the Indian wardrobe
And it’s clearly working.
Millennials bring in 29% of their revenue today..
But it’s Gen Z, 3.5x more likely to choose Uniqlo, that’s driving the real shift.
The brand is also picking up on the behavioural cues behind how they dress and what they need.Plus, how different cities come with different demands.
Take Delhi, for example… extreme heat in summers, biting cold in winters. Or Mumbai, where humidity is always at its peak.
So they’ve built their product mix around what actually works here (lightweight innerwear and airism tees)
And honestly, that kind of insight doesn’t come from market reports.
It comes from observing people closely 😊
A good article again. Have to commend you for knack of great articles. !! Special talent.
