Today marks the end of an hashtag#era. Skype, launched in August 2004, changed the way we connect.
Did you know "Skype" stands for “Sky Peer to Peer”?
In 2005, eBay acquired Skype for approximately $2.6 billion, but after struggling to achieve expected synergies, eBay sold a 65% stake in 2009 for $1.9 billion, valuing the company at around $2.75 billion. Two years later, in 2011, Microsoft acquired the entire company for $8.5 billion.
Now, Microsoft is retiring Skype in favor of hashtag#MicrosoftTeams.
While this shift isn’t surprising, it’s still a bittersweet moment. Skype revolutionized online chat and video calls, making it easier for friends, families, and colleagues to stay hashtag#connected.
